6 Essential Oils for Balancing Female Hormones

As women our bodies are profoundly affected by our hormones no matter what stage in life. 

As we age our bodies naturally decrease the production of oestrogen and progesterone. There is a delicate balancing act happening between these hormones and if out of whack we can experience some health concerns. Each of these hormones has a broad scope of functions that extend way beyond reproductive health; they also influence energy levels, sleep quality, brain, bone and heart health as well as weight management and others.  

The decrease in hormones is referred to as the menopause and is a natural part of the aging process. The menopause is the time when menstruation stops because the ovaries stop producing hormones and releasing eggs for fertilisation. Essential oils can exert a beneficial effect to manage the symptoms of hormonal imbalance. Hormone-balancing essential oils help support our body’s control centre, the hypothalamus, in its efforts to produce, release, and regulate hormones.  

Balance your hormones naturally with these top essential oils:

  1. Clary sage - this essential oil is known as “the woman essential oil” and is a hormone balancer – it balances the oestrogen in our body by distributing the hormone evenly. A natural remedy for PMS and menstrual cramps. Add 1/4 cup of Epsom salt to a warm bath, then add 3 drops of clary sage and 2 drops of lavender. Soak in the bath to help relieve PMS symptoms. This essential oil has anti-inflammatory and antidepressant effects.

  2. Geranium - can influence the release of adrenal hormones, which is a crucial part of our hormonal system.  Apply topically using a carrier oil over the abdomen area. Geranium is also a great stress reliever. Geranium also works towards balancing progesterone and promoting healthy ovaries. 

  3. Ylang Ylang – The queen of essential oils, this floral essential oil is one I turn to for libido, stress and more. Smells amazing. 

  4. Cypress - a refreshing woody coniferous aroma. This essential oil lowers cortisol levels and really relaxes the body.  It can also use it for hot flashes, moodiness, and fatigue that are a direct effect of menopause. This is because Cypress balances the hormones that control this time in a woman’s life

  5. Fennel – stimulates the production of oestrogen, helps with all the “monthly female issues” cramps, PMT, headaches and moodiness. Increasing milk in nursing mothers is another effect of this essential oils power. It packs a punch and can have a powerful effect on your hormones and their synergy.

  6. Frankincense/Lavender/Jasmine – stress relieving essential oils. Great for anxiety.  Diffuse through out the day to keep you relaxed and happy. These oils blend well together and can bring a world of relaxation. 

I use a specific blend for women called ClaryCalm – it has a soothing effect during a woman’s menstrual cycle. The calming aroma helps soothe and balance heightened emotions. All the essential oils in the blend ease muscle tension, balance hormone levels and lowers stress levels. It comes in a handy & portable roller bottle - I apply it topically on my feet at night time and sleep sound. 

Hormone Balancing Serum recipe

  • 2 drops clary sage oil

  • 2 drops of frankincense oil

  • 2 drops lavender oil

  • 2 drops neroli oil

  • 1 drops ylang ylang oil

  • 10 ml Carrier oil – I recommend liquid coconut oil

  • 10 ml roller bottle

How to Make Hormone Balancing Serum with Essential Oils for Hormones

  1. Put essential oils in roller bottle and fill with the carrier oil.

  2. Massage over neck (thyroid) and along lower back/over kidneys (adrenals) morning and night.

Try this recipe out for a number of months and monitor changes in how you look and feel.
